In many political movies where lawyers make the big shots, we always see someone trotting behind them or keeping tabs in the law firm. These people are called paralegals. So What is a Paralegal? A paralegal is someone who basically assists a lawyer. It is because of their association to a professional practicing law that they are also known as legal assistants.
The paralegal profession plays varying roles in different countries. In the United States, they are indeed legal assistants and are not authorized by law to perform any form of legal services. Ontario, Canada on the other hand, they can perform some legal work once they have their Paralegal Certification. They can also perform legal activities within the limitations of the law. For those in the United Kingdom, a paralegal is a non-lawyer who is able to do legal not considering for whom he or she is working for.
Now that we have defined what a paralegal is; let us now answer the question of What does paralegal do? Basically, paralegals are the legal assistants of the lawyers. They are the people working in the background. They do the paper work, in which they will do plenty of research about a certain case and gather that information in order to help win a trial. Many lawyers prefer this because paralegals are trained to do research and what not in the same way as lawyers. Paralegals also keep the lawyer’s schedule and ensure that it is being followed properly.
Paralegals also perform interviews with clients and other important people in order to gather more information in order to make a break in the case and even win it. In the court setting, they are the people who submit forms and applications. They also keep all legal files of the lawyer organized and easy to access. The bulk of it all, paralegals are the ones who will do plenty of work in the preparation of a trial.
However, do not be led to think that paralegals are purely secretaries of the lawyers because they are more than that. But you would be wrong because there are plenty of people who clamor for this kind of job. One reason for this is that the salary is really good and there are also plenty of benefits. But ultimately, paralegals have a sense of satisfaction in this kind of job because they also play an important part in the delivery of justice in a certain case. It is like without them, the lawyer will have to do everything and that can be tiring.
As the old saying goes, “Behind a successful man is a great woman”. In this line of thought, behind the wins of a lawyer is a great paralegal. Hence, paralegals are very important in the legal system especially when it comes to help a lawyer deliver the strong arm of the law.
