As the name suggests, a sink strainer is helpful to strain foreign materials such as hair, debris, and food scraps. It is often overlooked but it is actually really helpful in preventing the sink drain from getting clogged. To install a sink strainer, you have to follow the five easy steps below. You will also need paper towels or rags, plumber's putty or silicone caulking, sink cleaning solution, needle-nose pliers, and channel-lock pliers.
Step #1 - Clean the sink basin and the sink hole by spraying some cleaning solution and wipe the basin dry with rags or paper towels. This step is necessary to get rid of old, cracked plumber's putty or other residues that might prevent the new sink strainer flange to sit in properly.
Step #2 - Apply a handful of plumber's putty or a bead of silicone caulking into a ring the size of the sink hole rim. Carefully adjust the ring into the sink hole rim and attach both parts by applying a gentle pressure. Wipe away the excess putty or caulking with your finger.
Step #3 - Put the metal strainer basket into the hole and press around the edges to seal it to the silicone caulking or plumber's putty. There may be some excess silicone or putty between the hole and the strainer basket stem. You can clear it off with your finger, rag, or a putty knife.
Step #4 - Install the rubber gasket that comes with the strainer. Put the gasket beneath the strainer basket stem until the gasket is placed correctly in the bottom of the sink. Insert the cardboard gasket and locking nut. Hand tighten the nut beneath.
Step #5 - Have someone else hold the strainer basket firmly in place with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Meanwhile, using the channel-lock pliers, tighten the locking nut beneath the sink.
There you have it, an easy step-by-step guide for sink strainer installation. Remember that you should allow some time for the plumber's putty or the silicone caulking to completely dry before you can use the sink again. While waiting for the putty or caulking to set, do not turn on the faucet because water can wash it all away.
When you have finished installing the strainer, you should check for leaks. Fill the sink basin with water and see whether there is any dripping or oozing beneath the basin. Put a bucket below the sink if you do not want the floor to be wet.
